I think it was a gnome bug report about a similar issue and there was a
comment that is was the expected functionality. Afraid I don't know
which one exactly.

I usually use the indicator but just tested with the lid close and that
resumes without password!

Searching the closed gnome bugs I found something very similar:

A workaround was suggested so I used dconf-editor to find
"org.gnome.desktop.lockdown" and change "disable-lock-screen" to True.
Testing the suspend option from the indicator menu now resumes without
password.

  Asked for password on resume with Automatic Login enabled

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I have enabled Automatic Login but when resuming from suspend I am
  always asked for my password.

  This does not occur in Natty.

  Tested with Oneiric 11.10 Beta2
