Just wanted to pipe up and mention a similar problem is occurring with
Lubuntu Trusty, even though it uses LightDM. Note the empty black panels
on the desktop in the att screenshot.

Title:
Flashback (no effects) session unusable in Ubuntu GNOME Saucy

Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I've recently starting testing the "flashback (no effects)" session in
Saucy and and I find that it works flawlessly in Edubuntu and Ubuntu
but it's totally unusable in Ubuntu GNOME. I'll post some screenshots
soon, but basically the menus and windows do not respond properly at
  all.

That said I'm fine if Ubuntu GNOME wants to say "won't fix" because
it's OK to say "that's not something we want to focus on"! I just
don't want to start any FUD :^)
