I've seen it occasionally too. My guess it's either unity-greeter or
Xorg doing something wrong.

Title:
  Keyboard input not received by password field

Status in Light Display Manager:

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Running yesterday's trusty. On reboot, lightdm appears but typing does
  work. Am unable to enter anything in the password field, or press
  up/down to change user.

  If in a VT I do "sudo restart lightdm" then I can log in.
