Sounds related to my experience with a 1920x1200 HDMI connected to a laptop. After boot and auto-login, if the laptop display is configured above the external, the external comes up blank. Side by side, the laptop comes up blank. If I change the desktop background, then both monitors show the proper background.
next reboot I'll have to try the lightdm restart idea to see what happens. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1033052 Title: Black screen after completed boot on ASUS Eee 1101HA (xubuntu 12.04: psb_gfx/gma500: ioremap error for 0x7f66e000-0x7f671000) Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Screen is black after boot has completed. Entering teminal window (Ctrl + Alt + F1) works fine. Returning to the graphical window (Ctrl + Alt + F7), the upper half og the scrren is filled with the lower part of the background image and a split login window while the lower half of the screen is black. The cursor is responsive and tracks the mousepad. Moving the cursor around makes more of the background image visible. Workaround (sort of)): Return to the terminal window, log in and issue: $ sudo service lightdm stop; sudo service lightdm start This will restore the expected GUI login window. This workaround fails after suspend. $ lspci -vvk [...] 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation System Controller Hub (SCH Poulsbo) Graphics Controller (rev 07) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
