Except for the Simplified/Traditional switch under limited circumstances, there should be no need to change any of these settings while typing. > 2. Why is the default number of candidates 5? Interesting question, but this is for the maintainers of the pinyin package to figure out. It probably has to do with the maximum acceptable size of the candidate list when it's laid out horizontally. Sometimes you might have candidates with 2 or more characters, other times you have only 1. If you have a fixed number of candidates, sometimes 5 is too few, and sometimes 5 is just right (most of the time it's too few).
