Logout and login from the terminal followed by <CTRL>+<ALT>+F7 to reaccess X does not bring back the keyboard. My current workaround is to use suspend and then reactivate. This always finds the keyboard after which all is normal. The problem began after an update to something (I'm not sure what as the problem is spasmodic).
