Same problem for me on a fresh 12.04.4 install (zbook 15, i7, nvidia quadro 1100, nvidia driver). No workaround works. The alternate switcher just don't work. I had to switch to KDE, which has it's own share of problems but at least alt-tab works. I'd like to get back to gnome classic (sometimes gnome shell freezes).
