Are you sure it is just the backlight that is off? (Does changing its
brightness restore the display?) Can you please attach a drm.debug=6
dmesg from across the suspend & resume?

  thi s  is a problem after upgradeing from 13.10 to 14.04 beta. System has 
latest 14.04 updates

  After suspend, the screen does not resume. There is no backlighting.
