Having now upgraded to 14.04, the problem is still present. In fact, it seems to be worse. Now, when the screen "goes mad" then I am left with whichever window was last in use (normally maximised) and can't do anything else. All menus are unavailable and I can't even open the terminal via CTRL+ALT+T. The only thing I can do is to cycle the power. The trigger for the problem to start seems to be a window being maximised (or at least, it seems to happen often at the same time as a window being maximised).
Would appreciate if this bug can be re-opened. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1268275 Title: 10de:07e1 [HP Pavilion p6020jp Desktop PC] Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: This is a bug report filed immediately after a screen freeze occurred. The symptom is that during normal use the system will lock up. The mouse can still be moved but I can't click on any open applications. The sound services will continue to operate (seemingly in the background). Then I wait for about 10 to 20 seconds and the windows will flash seemingly in a random order until it finally shows just the wall paper (background) and then settles down with a crash report. At that point, the system is either completely back to normal, or partially OK (the missing aspect being the menu bars of all open applications - in which case a re-boot is necessary). I have already installed the current nvidia drivers and tried to remove nouveau but that seemed to have already been removed.
