Ok I figured out the problem. The volume keys on my laptop don't work after I disconnect my laptop from HDMI. The solution that worked for me is, I went to system settings -> sound and changed the profile under hardware tab to "Analog Stereo Duplex"
Now the volume keys on my keyboard work again.
