Definitely sounds like a Compiz crash. Trying to launch compiz, or and X11 application, from a VT (control- alt-F1) will not work, since there is no X server available on the console. It might work if you explcitly set the DISPLAY environment variable (export DISPLAY=:0.0) first.
It's unfortunate, but none of the attached log files reveal any information about the cause of this crash. Do you see any files in /var/crash? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1334716 Title: FATAL ERROR: Unable to initialize display Status in “compiz” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I went to the appearance settings by right-clicking on the desktop to change the visibility of the launcher, have set the sensitivity, exited after changes were made, after a few times of showing and hiding the launcher Compiz crashed and the display couldn't be restored not even after going into TTY and using "compiz --replace". compiz-core has shown what appeared to be a fatal error that it was unable to initialize the display, so the only option was to do a hard shutdown.
