I guess it is way to late for me to figure that out now. However, you might try to run your computer from a USB pen, installing Ubuntu 14.04 with unetbootin and then see what behavior you get. That is what I did and made me realize that the problem likely relied in some settings. Maybe try removing the .compiz directory? If you figure out which one it is, let me know.
Also, the behavior I have now is slightly different from the behavior I had with Ubuntu 13.10. Before I would add the resolution with xrandr and then change display again with xrandr. Now, instead, as soon as I add the resolution with xrandr the display changes automatically. I believe that Unity 14.04 responds automatically to some changes, while Unity 13.10 did not, and for some reasons this was leading to the crashes before. I have also noticed that my laptop used to run some dbus program after boot that would make the hard drive spin for several minutes before coming to a rest. Since I deleted all my configuration files, that is not happening anymore.
