I recently "upgraded" to 12.04.4 on my Dell E6500 (on which I had 10.04.4 running quite smoothly for years) and this bug has bitten me and so far none of the resolutions I've found & tried via various forums has worked to resolve it. I am quite sad. :(

However, as of around 2 months ago, the display no longer comes on when I resume. Note: I cannot say for sure that this is an X or NVIDIA bug and not a kernel bug. I have no information on which update exactly broke it. Also note: This seems to have happened at the same time as an intermittent problem where waking the display from sleep/lock causes it (sometimes, not always) to be deathly slow and basically unusable. I was originally using the x-updates PPA, because it fixed some other problems a while back, but I've switched back to the mainline nvidia- current, and the behavior has not changed at all.
