I also have a system which I thought could not be upgraded beyond 12.04 because of a lack of PAE support, but then I recently found that many Pentium M CPUs can work with a PAE kernel, but do not advertise PAE support.

It is hoped that an updated version of Modem Manager that addresses this and other bug fixes can be introduced into 12.04 LTS very soon for users like myself who have been looking out patiently for a couple of years for this functionality.
