i have the exact same behavior, i need to kill the process to get rid of it.

As far as I can tell there's no particular pattern to it - It happens whether or not I'm interacting with banshee or not. It also happens whether or not any music is playing. RAM and CPU usage are normal, so I'm pretty sure it's not freezing up for lack of resources. It seems like sometimes the music keeps playing and sometimes it doesn't. I suspect (although I haven't confirmed this) that it keeps playing the rest of whatever track it's on but doesn't go on to the next one.
