But it has not been updated since last year and this just happened to me trying 14.10 (Utopic). Before installing the binary drivers, the nouveau driver was in use and lightdm started automatically. But then would crash the whole system somehow related to fading in popup menues. But that is another problem. Since the binary drivers are installed the system only boots into text mode. But is more stable after manually starting lightdm.
