It may be that xdg-utils v1.1.0-rc2 is patched.

Any chance of Ubuntu updating xdg-utils to v1.1.0-rc2 or simply carrying
the patch if not?

Bug description:
  I had to modify /usr/bin/xdg-open to duplicate the gnome parts and
  replace /gnome/mate/. Some applications like chrome/chromium open
  their file using xdg-open.
