A comment on "I'm doubtful this fix will be backported to 14.04 because it's actually an odd case."
For me there was nothing odd. I did straight backup and then tried a restore. I use LTS versions for havin some stability and long term support. But what is this worth if the essential feature "restore" of the standard backup software which is shipped does not do what is expected ?
