LibreOffice on Ubuntu 12.04 didnt really see an update recently. What
exactly changed on your system since the last time it worked? Also an
example document would be helpful.

Title:
  [12.04] Cross-references don't work in documents opened read-write

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
LibreOffice-writer cross references stopped working approximately last
Friday January 9. Instead of figure captions showing "Figure 5: this
is the caption", they say "Figure Number range Figure: this is the
caption", and other references have other tags. Not one of them shows
the number. LibreOffice had worked -- on the same documents -- just
fine a coupe of days earlier.

When I open the same document read-only, all of the cross-references
  display just fine.

The exact same documents open just fine in OpenOffice on a Windows
  machine.

  This is on Ubuntu 12.04, libreoffice-writer 1:3.5.7-0ubuntu7.
