Title:
No sound after reboot from NVidia GeForce GT 430 HDMI audio

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I have an NVidia Geforce GT 430 graphics card with HDMI output. The
HDMI audio works fine in Window 7, so I know all the hardware is OK.
After booting into Ubuntu 10.10 (with updates applied) and selecting
HDA NVidia in sound preferences, I get no sound from any program.
  aplay -l lists 4 devices for card 1: 3, 7, 8, 9.

I can get sound by running "aplay -D plughw:1,9
/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav" but never the first time. To
get this command to produce sound I first have to run "aplay -D
  plughw:1,8 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav". This produces a
click sound in the speakers, after which I can get sound from "aplay
  -D plughw:1,9 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav". The sound is
clear and undistorted. (I'm assuming this is because the alsa driver
  isn't initializing the card properly.)

After I perform the above steps to trick the card into working, I can
usually select the card (HDA NVidia) in sound preferences and get
badly distorted sound through any program.

It seems like there are two problems here: the card isn't initializing
properly, and after it has been initialized pulseaudio can't play
audio through it properly (as evidenced by the bad distortion.)
