In my case it was a fresh install. I eventually managed to workaround it
and make it work but I don't remember how. This is what I have installed
now:

$ dpkg -l *compiz* |grep ii
ii compiz 1:0.9.7.12-0ubuntu4
                       OpenGL window and compositing manager
ii compiz-core 1:0.9.7.12-0ubuntu4
                       OpenGL window and compositing manager
ii compiz-gnome 1:0.9.7.12-0ubuntu4
OpenGL window and compositing manager - GNOME window
decorator
ii compiz-plugins 1:0.9.7.12-0ubuntu4
OpenGL window and compositing manager - plugins
ii compiz-plugins-default 1:0.9.7.12-0ubuntu4
OpenGL window and compositing manager - default plugins
ii compiz-plugins-main 1:0.9.7.0~bzr19-0ubuntu10.1
                       Compiz plugins - main collection
ii compiz-plugins-main-default 1:0.9.7.0~bzr19-0ubuntu10.1
Compiz plugins - main default collection
ii compizconfig-backend-gconf 0.9.5.92-0ubuntu5
Compiz Fusion configuration system - gconf backend
ii compizconfig-settings-manager 0.9.5.92-0ubuntu3
                       Compiz configuration settings manager
ii libcompizconfig0 0.9.7.0~bzr428-0ubuntu6
Settings library for plugins - OpenCompositing Project
ii python-compizconfig 0.9.5.94-0ubuntu4
                       Compizconfig bindings for python

(it's a little different from the list I gave in #41)

So it seems that I installed packages from

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/amd64/compiz-plugins-main-dev
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/amd64/libcompizconfig0-dev
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/amd64/compizconfig-settings-manager

Furthermore I have this plugin ~/.compiz-1/plugins/libcube.so of 163080
bytes probably because of this
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:qA_apIZ2-iAJ:ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1938942.html+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk
(I give the google cache because the direct link doesn't work anymore
for me)

It's a strange mix but it kind of works. Known problems: sometimes
resizing a window stops with some extra space around it and rotating the
cube with a window doesn't work. The window goes back to the original
face as soon as I stop rotating it. Anyway all the alternatives are
worse for me. This UI is still the one that better suits my way of
working.
