I had this same problem running Ubuntu 11.10 (my network, 178, became
²).

Mathieu, I just tried your package and it fixed things perfectly. Thank
you.

Title:
numeric SSID becomes "e" on the connection

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
My work's wifi network is named "101", after connecting the connection
  gets ssid=e. manually changing /etc/NetworkManager/system-
connections/101 and using nmcli to connect doesn't work. nm is still
  seeing it as "e".

later connections to the same network spawn new "101 %d" connections,
all with ssid=e and usable one time only.
