In thunderbird 1:31.7.0+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1 you can see the number of selected messages in the status bar.

I would have thought it would appear in the status bar at the bottom on the left. Using Ubuntu 9.04, and Thunderbird 2.0.0.22 (20090608). More a wishlist than real bug (since nothing damaging happens).
