Ok, with thanks to lotuspsychje who did some testing it seems the issue
is triggered with switching of the "show the menu for one window"
setting in systemsettings->appearance -> theme behaviour.

switching it one time triggers "something" that makes the windowsbuttons
go to the right side no matter what setting is used afterwards.

on a clean install, it is all fine. then one time switching this setting
makes them go to the right forever. even on ambiance theme.

  ubuntu 16.04 alpha:
  gedit 3.18 now has its toolbar placed in the window titlebar. because of that 
the window buttons are placed on the right again.

  this is inconsistent to all other windows (i just realized it because
  i moved the curser to the left upper edge to close gedit and didnt
  find the windowbuttons)
