Debian does it differently - is there any advantage over each method? I'm wondering if we should just copy the Debian init script entirely, given the Ubuntu version seems very out of date.

Please could you add --background option to start-stop-daemon to fix this? (note: the debian lightdm package already does this) This change is needed for ubuntuBSD (which uses SysV init to manage system daemons). Thank you!
