> Are we sure the bug was in Poppler?

No. But there is no test case, nor AFAICT a known way to test under the
same circumstances (which are in parts unknown - e.g. into which prefix
was the user-compiled poppler version installed? which poppler version
was inkscape trunk installed from PPA actually attempting to load?).

I was mistaken about stable Inkscape 0.91 though - the project does indeed
offer 0.91 for 12.04 via PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/+archive/ubuntu/stable
If the reporter still uses (K)Ubuntu 12.04, it might be worthwhile to undo any
local poppler upgrades, install Inkscape 0.91 from PPA and retest PDF import,
relying on poppler installed via package manager (i.e. the same version against
which the PPA build is compiled).

OTOH we do have similar reports against stable 0.91 (on newer distros) which
are still open (it's a crash though instead of hang that also occurs even
before the PDF import dialog is opened):
bug #1584659 and duplicate bug #1584659

Title:
Hang on import of pdf files

Status in Inkscape:
  New
Status in inkscape package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Inkcsapce daily build (ppa) installed on Kubuntu 12.04 hangs evrytime
while importing a pdf file. It does not depend on the file and the
dialog to preview the file is not opened. The program just frezes.

The output on the terminal is:
  (inkscape:3367): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_get_visible: assertion
`GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

I have poppler .26 installed (self compiled) and okular, kile (live
preview of pdf), Scribus and GIMP (import pdf) working fine.

I cant even compile inkscape with poppler 0.26 and I get a lot of
errors (but this is not the same bug I think).

  Thanks for helping...
