** Description changed: When using the notebook for a long time, nm-applet leaks more and more memory. This happens especially when I'm connected to a weak wifi network (actually it is more likely that the wifi driver is weak) and the connection aborts frequently, ie. most of the time it is trying to connect. It is noticeable that the "searching wifi" animation in the Unity panel causes a significant CPU load (of the compiz process) and fan noise. When I kill nm-applet, the CPU load is gone (while it is still searching wifi).
