Well, I have done some research... First, I un-installed this version (49.0.2+build2-0ubuntu0.16.10.2) and installed the previous 49.0 version and then the previous 49.0 version and then versions 48, 47, 46, 45, 44, 43, 42, 41, 40, and 39 (each time selecting the last available incarnation of whichever version I found) These were from: https://sourceforge.net/projects/ubuntuzilla/files/mozilla/apt/pool/main/f/firefox-mozilla-build/
When I got down to version 45.0.2, instead of the trail of window-bars going up and down the screen when I [un]minimized one of the Firefox windows, they remained blank. Mostly. I noted at some point after this, that after leaving the room and returning, one of the blank windows was no longer blank, but had the content from that pages selected tab. It went away when I did, and did not return when I went back, but this was my first clue that Firefox was not completely dead in the water. I went back to htop in terminal to check something: I had it up constantly, as each time I attempted to try one of the Firefox versions, I then had to use htop to kill the process(es). before I could uninstall and try the next version. When I did so, I found that both of my CPUs were heavily in use - one [almost] always at 100%. RAM usage was right up there as well, and swap had been used some (normally not). So apparently something is causing Firefox to use up most of my CPUs, and much of the RAM. Since I have not had this problem before, and I had to go back many versions to test it, I suppose it is a mis-behaving tab/website. I perhaps am overly optimistic, but I figure it is at least partly Firefox's duty to corral errant websites/tabs to make sure they don't try to take over my machine in their greediness of my CPU/RAM. Oh well, I suppose there actually isn't much Firefox can do to stop them. Anyway, I am currently using Firefox version 38.0.5, which seems to cope far better with whatever is wrong - my CPU usage is less than 20% on average, and RAM is OK. Since I am SUCH a nice guy, I am going to un-install 38.0.5 (but keep it in my Downloads folder) and re-install 49.0.x, and try removing some tabs that might have caused the problem. If for some reason, Firefox is able to correctly shut down, and thus I don't have the option to select certain tabs to not install, is there any way to FORCE Firefox to put up the select-which-tabs-to-restore window? ** Attachment added: "Window non-refresh, present down to FF 45.0.2" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1639015/+attachment/4772107/+files/Firefox_Freeze.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1639015 Title: firefox loads windows/tabs, freezes - screen is not refreshed Status in firefox package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Last night, as I was about to go to bed, firefox became unresponsive, and its window area(s) ceased to refresh: if a window was minimized, the title bar left a trail as it went, and if un-minimized, did the same; any system notification menu (appears when the icon is clicked on) that encroached on the window area did not go away, etc. Today, when starting firefox, after the windows/tabs were loaded, the same thing happened. Both times, I had to use htop from a terminal to shut it down. I will try and see if I have an earlier firefox available, to see if the problem manifests with that one as well (also to have something I can use...). I will report back anything I learn. ------------------------------------------------- scott@scott-ASUS-M2N68-AM-PLUS:~$ uname -a Linux scott-ASUS-M2N68-AM-PLUS 4.8.0-26-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 18 14:39:52 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux scott@scott-ASUS-M2N68-AM-PLUS:~$ lsb_release -dsc Ubuntu 16.10 yakkety scott@scott-ASUS-M2N68-AM-PLUS:~$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION Lubuntu scott@scott-ASUS-M2N68-AM-PLUS:~$ firefox -version Mozilla Firefox 49.0.2 49.0.2+build2-0ubuntu0.16.10.2 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.10 Package: firefox 49.0.2+build2-0ubuntu0.16.10.2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.8.0-26.28-generic 4.8.0 Uname: Linux 4.8.0-26-generic x86_64 AddonCompatCheckDisabled: False AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version k4.8.0-26-generic.
