Can someone who can reproduce this try a scan with the default settings, then the settings set to the maximum, and the set to minimum?

Appearently someone mixed up the direction of the sliders, i.e. if you want to scan darker you now have to move the slider towards "brighter". Same with "contrast". For "quality" the best setting is the center position.
