I ran it just now. It's Ubuntu 16.04. I remember having the same issue in 14.04.

The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.example.com for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again. This is very confusing and impossible to troubleshoot. It should report "The server's SSL certificate failed OCSP validation. To reproduce, go get a startssl certificate, add it to an smtp server, connect with thunderbird, receive error. In settings, disable ocsp verification, and it connects with no error and behaves as expected. --- AddonCompatCheckDisabled: False ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2.5 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USER PID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC2: ben 2487 F.... pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC1: ben 2487 F.... pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC0: ben 2487 F.... pulseaudio BuildID: 20170125182329 Channel: Unavailable CurrentDesktop: Unity DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 ForcedLayersAccel: False IfupdownConfig: # interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8) auto lo iface lo inet loopback IncompatibleExtensions: English (GB) Language Pack - langpack-en...@thunderbird.mozilla.org Thunderbird (default) - {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd} InstallationDate: Installed on 2014-09-03 (932 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS "Trusty Tahr" - Release amd64 (20140722.2) IpRoute: default via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 proto static metric 100 169.254.0.0/16 dev eth0 scope link metric 1000 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.174 metric 100 IwConfig: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions.
