Woah, that's an oldie :-) I've been through all subsequent releases (currently writing this from Kubuntu 17.04) and the issue has not happened to me since 10.10.
So, unless somebody else still has it, I consider it fixed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625895 Title: music (Rhythmbox) and video (flash) don't run smoothly Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Binary package hint: pulseaudio It goes a bit like this (for last 3-4 days): I listen to some music with Rhythmbox, all is fine, then suddenly it starts behaving strange. There are some random "flashbacks", as if the playback was reversed for - say - a second, then reversed again for split-second. Also, many chaotic noises intervene. Also affects flash (YouTube). I've tracked the error to be - most probably - caused by pulseAudio. When I stop the pulseAudio process (in Gnome's System Monitor), wait a while, and then resume it - for some time playback continues uninterrupted. Killing everything connected with pulseAudio sometimes helps, too. I've got to admit, this is a hugely annoying issue. I run Maverick on 64bit Asus UL20A laptop, if that's of any importance.
