Actually, it was a Facebook setting. Sorry I didn't update this post
when I found out. Facebook chat as a setting to disable Facebook chat. I
re-enabled it and now it works. It wasn't an issue with Empathy after
all. Thank you for following up.

  Ubuntu 11.04 with Kernel 3.0.1-030001-generic on i686

  Facebook chat doesn't seem to work. Empathy shows on my laptop that I
  am logged in, but no one on Facebook can see me and everyone appears
  to be logged out of Facebook chat in the Empathy interface.
