VPN network menu items disappear after suspend

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
This is not consistent, but sometimes after suspending when i
reconnect the VPN menu items (using OpenVPN) are gone. I can launch
the VPN by going to Network Settings and toggling a particular VPN
setting off and then back on. Tried "sudo service network-manager
  restart" but no help.

Using fully updated 16.04.2 LTS on ThinkPad T460.
  network-manager 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1
