This problem has been RESOLVED. After much hassle, machine was returned to Lenovo for service. They could not find any hardware test that indicated any failures, but after I raised a ruckus they replaced the "system board" and now the problem is gone.

Another symptom is that system restart always turns off the power rather than rebooting. I looked at the manifest of the update that seems to have caused trouble and the only suspicious entry is a microcode update from Intel.
