When I open GIMP, what I say in the summary above happens. I raised the problem on a GIMP users list. I was told that the same thing does NOT happen when GIMP is installed via flatpak in Fedora. The person who gave me that information also reported a bug to flatpak based on what I'd said, but flatpak closed the bug, claiming that the error isn't a flatpak error, but a Ubuntu error. Hence this report.
