Is this still happening on 18.04?

I guess this could have been caused also by changing desktop (i.e.
switching unity to gnome?).

  HiDPI scaling does not hold across reboot

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Running Ubuntu 17.10 Beta (updated as of 29 Sept 2017) on Parallels
  Desktop 13.  When changing the HiDPI scaling to 200% everything looks
  good, but on restart the settings are reset to 100%.
