Title:
Document Viewer has no support for common office document file formats

Status in evince package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: evince

Working on creating some new checkbox tests and I've discovered that
evince, at least as shipped in 10.04 LTS has no support for MS Office
formats. I've tried the .xls and .doc files that are shipped in
  /usr/share/example-content.

In both cases, evince opens with an error that says:

File type OLE2 compound document storage (application/x-ole-storage)
  is not supported.

For kicks, I then tried .odt files and got this error:

  File type OpenDocument Text (application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text)
  is not supported.

Nor does it support .rtf documents:

File type RTF document (application/rtf) is not supported.

Nor does it like ods documents:

  File type OpenDocument Spreadsheet
  (application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.spreadsheet) is not supported

It DOES open odp documents. at least...

I did not have a pdf file on hand to try...

BUT, in any case, it does not seem to support ANYTHING right now
  beyond Open Office Presentation files...
