Hmm. It seems I can only attach one file per comment. So attached here is an annotated syslog from 11.04 where the modem works just fine. In order to rule out any local changes being the source of the problem, the system was booted from the live CD.
Subsequent post will have a syslog from 11.10 where the modem fails to work.
