OK, it is now evident that my problem (bug 879793) is not a duplicate of
this one. The error codes are different and the cause is different.
Though both are due to gnome-settings-daemon dying.

  gnome-settings-daemon crashes on clipboard manager failure

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  As described in [1] the crashes are caused by gnome-settings-daemons
  integrated clipboard manager trying to get clipboard content of
  applications being closed.

  Workaround:
  gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.clipboard active false

except Nautilus!
  All icons are the same, they are black/white and really "boring". The
