I guess the bug is simular in the fact that changing the settings in defaulta 
applications does not change the settings for default application to open 
certain mimetype.
If this is the case in bug #876897 then these are duplicate bugs, just with 
different mimetypes.

Title:
  Default-application-chooser doesent do anything

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I tried to edit what applications to be default in my Unbuntu setup, but 
apperantly it does not apply my new settings through out the system. Eg. I used 
to have banshee as my default music player, but now I want to use the Movie 
player to play music. I change the settings in my system settings but still 
banshee opens every time I try to open a music file. 
  Same applies for movies, which used to be played in Movie player, but should 
now open in VLC. They still opens in Movie Player though
