Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket? If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug? It would be nice if hplip provides optionally a virtual modem for use with hylafax. A good starting point is the t38project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/t38modem/) which provides the source for a virtual modem and connects to sip endpoint on other side. It should be easy to replace the sip part by driver access.
