Many crashes indeed do not leave crash files. Please verify that you have tried ALL the steps from comment #1.

The desktop freezes to input, mysql-workbench freezes, the rightclick menu renders an outline but inner contents are not shown, but a terminal for example or video will still play, wont freeze. You just wont be able to move or click any windows or switch virtual workstations. The only remedy is switch to another tty and kill mysql-workbench process. Or kill gnome-shell :(.
