According to http://hplipopensource.com/hplip- web/models/officejet/hp_officejet_pro_8740.html HP 8740 should be supported with HPLIP 3.16.5. I've installed HPLIP 3.16.5 from Yaketty in Xenial by recompiling it to build a native package with native Xenial dependencies. I've installed the following resulting packages: hplip, hplip-data, hplip-gui, libhpmud0, libsane-hpaio, printer- driver-hpcups, printer-driver-postscript-hp. However, lpinfo -m doesn't list HP 8740: $ lpinfo -m | grep 8740 gutenprint.5.2://bjc-PIXMA-iP8740/expert Canon PIXMA iP8740 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.11 foomatic:Canon-PIXMA-iP8740-gutenprint-ijs-simplified.5.2.ppd Canon PIXMA-iP8740 Foomatic/gutenprint-ijs-simplified.5.2 foomatic:Canon-PIXMA-iP8740-gutenprint-ijs.5.2.ppd Canon PIXMA-iP8740 Foomatic/gutenprint-ijs.5.2 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 Package: hplip (not installed) ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.4.0-24.43-generic 4.4.10 Uname: Linux 4.4.0-24-generic i686 ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2.1 Architecture: i386 CupsErrorLog: CurrentDesktop: KDE Date: Thu Jun 23 17:03:01 2016 InstallationDate: Installed on 2016-04-26 (58 days ago) InstallationMedia: Kubuntu 16.04 LTS "Xenial Xerus" - Release i386 (20160420.1) Lpstat: Error: command ['lpstat', '-v'] failed with exit code 1: lpstat: No destinations added.
