** Changed in: system-config-printer (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Expired -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to system-config-printer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/283895 Title: system-config-printer needs awareness of ~/.cups/lpoptions (as of 8.04) Status in system-config-printer package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: Binary package hint: system-config-printer As of the version shipped with Ubuntu 8.04, system-config-printer (System->Administration->Printing) does not check for, and is not aware of, "personal" ~/.cups/lpoptions files. With system-config- printer oblivious, the UI does not accurately reflect reality. Specifically: A user may have created a ~/.cups/lpoptions file by using lpoptions -d or other mechanisms. As system-config-printer exists today, the personal lpoptions file will silently override any settings, such as default printer, made in the system-config-printer GUI. If ~/.cups/lpoptions exists, looking at both system-config-printer and the global CUPS configuration (localhost:631) will show the global setting with no hint that the current user has overridden the setting. Suggested resolution: In the short term, add a test for ~/.cups/lpoptions, and if it exists show a warning such as "The file ~/.cups/lpoptions exists and may override any settings shown or made here." Possibly with "Show contents" and "Remove this file?" options. In the long term, there seems to be some demand for both global and local options in the GUI per bug 127071. That would require the GUI to be much smarter about local lpoptions, where exactly the settings are being stored, and which ones are effective/being shown at a particular time.
