Uninstalling all extensions did not seem to make a difference; the gnome-shell process is back up to 10G RSS after an hour.

At the same time, gnome-shell appears to become progressively less responsive. Restarting gnome-shell (via <Alt><F2> restart) drops shell RSS down to ~400MB and improves system responsiveness a bit.
