I was thinking more about all the other places in the UI where these
underlined letters still live (as you said for 20 years so clearly for
too long), but I understand that Photon has already a big scope.

Title:
Menu accelerators in Firefox don't follow the GNOME policy.

Status in Mozilla Firefox:
  Confirmed
Status in One Hundred Papercuts:
  Fix Released
Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: firefox

The current GNOME default is that menu accelerators are hidden, and
shown when you press the ALT key.

Firefox doesn't observe this policy and have their menu accelerators
  displayed all the time.

Also, pressing ALT alone in GNOME and Firefox doesn't invoke any menu
  command.

This inconsistent behavior is a usability issue and also makes Ubuntu
  desktop look unprofessional.
