This phone is over 3 years old, so I was surprised to see that this

  Access to Samsung fails in file manager

Status in libmtp package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Trying to connect to smartphone with a file manager and it hangs
  there.

  Seems to work fine in 18.04.1, using a 18.10 live session it fails to
  work.
