Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be appreciated, if of course the issue is still current, you could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi#h=dupes%7CThunderbird. If or when you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status. If the issue has been resolved in a recent Thunderbird release then please let us know so that we can close this bug report. Thanks in advance. Works fine when I connect to Gmail's IMAP server. Thunderbird 52.7.0 under Ubuntu 14.04 does not have this issue. I notice that the version of Thunderbird under 18.04 is actually older than the version under 14.04. I sugguest an update to a more recent and stable release of Thunderbird before the final release date.
