Perhaps they've decided to take a page from insurance and big corps facing class action lawsuits: delay until the plaintiffs die (or lose interest or give up).

So when a user chooses "open this file" in firefox, rhythmbox pops up and nothing happens. I think the same goes for .m3u playlists. On the other hand, it's a shame rhythmbox doesn't support external playlists well...
