Can't get any input or output to USX2Y (US-122) external USB sound
card

Bug description:
I was able to use my US-122 USB Audio/Midi interface with no problems
under Ubuntu 11.10.
I have loaded the latest USX2Y firmware and have the sound card
recognized under lsusb. I also have the USX2Y firmware being loaded
as I can see the the lights turn on when I plug in the USB cable.
The USX2Y shows up under /proc/asound and I can see it show up in my
Alsa sound settings.
However, I cannot get any input or get any output from the USX2Y
device.
I tested with aplay. aplay -D hw:0,0
/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav doesn't work.
However aplay -D default /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
works.
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav also works.
It's like Alsa is broken and won't allow me to directly reference the
hw:0,0 or hw:1,0.
Audacity works if I use the default sound card. But if I try to use
hw:1,0 for recording it stops recording after a second. I can
actually hear what I recorded. So it looks like it's trying to work,
but then encounters some issue and stops.
Any thoughts, help, ideas appreciated. Let me know if you need any more
details.
